More efficient buildings, certified internationally
EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is a green-building certification created by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group. It measures and certifies a building’s savings across three key resources, with a minimum of 20% in each.
The three pillars
Energy
Orientation, an efficient envelope, lighting and equipment that reduce the building’s energy consumption.
Water
Efficient fixtures and fittings, reuse and strategies that lower potable-water consumption.
Materials
Selection of materials with lower embodied energy in walls, floors, roofs and structure.
Certification levels
EDGE Certified
At least 20% savings in energy, water and embodied energy in materials.
EDGE Advanced
40% or more energy savings. A level reached, for example, at the OL Offices.
Zero Carbon
100% energy savings through efficiency and renewable energy.
The stages of the process
Preliminary Certification
Awarded at the design stage, once the project demonstrates it meets the EDGE savings.
Final Certification
Awarded after construction, with an audit that verifies on site what was designed.
